Hi everybody,

I would be very grateful for some help with a question that I have. I understand that a tick is the smallest amount the price of an instrument can move by. For UK stocks I think it is usually either 0.1p or 0.25p.

I wonder if anyone has any idea how I can find out what the tick value for a particular instrument (share) is using sharescope, or any other means?

I ask this question because many strategies have rules along the lines of “buy if today’s price rises one tick above yesterday’s high”.

Many thanks, in advance, for your help.

Peter

I am not aware of any short cut for the underlying instruments, other than find out which exchange is responsible for the product and check the product information there. And of course dont trade the instrument if you dont have this essential information.

With currencies it is nice and easy because for almost all the currency pairs one tick is 0.0001, except USDJPY for which it is 0.01.

For most US shares it is one cent, you have commented on the UK shares yourself, and if you are trading commodities you need to get the info from CBOT or CME or which exchange organises the market.

In a lot of cases you will find that the spread betting firm base the structure of their bets around the tick size, so for instance with the currencies bets will be £1 per 0.0001 of the currency pair price (£ per 0.01 in the case of USDJPY)
