I am not aware of any short cut for the underlying instruments, other than find out which exchange is responsible for the product and check the product information there. And of course dont trade the instrument if you dont have this essential information.
With currencies it is nice and easy because for almost all the currency pairs one tick is 0.0001, except USDJPY for which it is 0.01.
For most US shares it is one cent, you have commented on the UK shares yourself, and if you are trading commodities you need to get the info from CBOT or CME or which exchange organises the market.
In a lot of cases you will find that the spread betting firm base the structure of their bets around the tick size, so for instance with the currencies bets will be £1 per 0.0001 of the currency pair price (£ per 0.01 in the case of USDJPY)
