Shortlist creation
  • Feeesh January 2011
Hi all, first post on this forum, and I'm probably sure it's a question that's been answered before.

Having read Malcolms book I've been trying to create shortlists but they seem to take forever to do looking at every share in the ftse 350. I'm wondering is there a site or platform that could simply pick the shares for you, for a given set of parameters?

I've seen the sharescope site mentioned on here, but as a bit of a beginner I'm a little reluctant to start paying monthly and eking into my not so massive profits so far. If there is a site that could provide this for fre that would be awesome.....
If not and sharescope is the best which payment method/band/price thing would be best to start of with.

    Thanks in advance

Many stockbrokers (e.g. Barclays Stockbrokers) provide tools on their web sites -- if you have an account with them -- to filter stocks by price, P/E, dividend yield, sector, 52-week high / low, and many other parameters.

Another idea would be to create your own spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel (but it could be the free Google Docs spreadsheet) to suck free price data from Yahoo! Finance and to filter / highlight the interesting stocks as I have done with my Position Trading Cockpit spreadsheet. Instructions on how I created this kind of spreadsheet are in the new Second Edition of my book.

If you are considering not purchasing any software to help you use technical analysis to filter stocks then here are some free or partially free sites to check out:

If you want to set up your own automatic screener to find stocks with particluar conditions e.g.RSI less than 30, plus anything else.Have a look at:
    http://www.prorealtime.com/en/
You can register for free , they have very good charts and you can program your own screener. Personally I don't use them, I use the EXCEL solution proposed by Tony Loton above which I find is more flexible.

Yes it most certainly is possible, in fact it is quite surprising what you can do with EXCEL: I down load prices from Yahoo automatically I then use "User Defined Functions" that I have written myself for things like ADX, RSI ,AVTR, EMA , Stochastics etc, to analyse the data and screen the stocks for certain particular conditions, if the computer detects that a condition has trigger I have then programmed the computer to automatically send me a SMS text message which arrives with 1 or 2 seconds on my phone. So I am not trapped at the computer waiting for events to happen!!
If you want some help with anything like this or something simpler; do PM me and I can point you in the right direction.

This is the best for the UK market mind (in my opinion)
